Assistant Professor in Statistics and Mathematics

Marcelo Goncalves De Martino was born in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. He embarked on his academic journey at the State University of Campinas, where he earned both his BSc in Mathematics (Full Teaching Certificate) and an MSc in Mathematics. Marcelo then decided to leave his hometown and travelled to Europe to continue his studies. He further advanced his Mathematical schooling by completing a Masterclass on Moduli Spaces of Curves at Utrecht University and his educational journey culminated with a joint PhD degree from the University of Amsterdam and Aix-Marseille University, having written a thesis on a subject lying in the intersection between Algebra, Analysis and Number Theory.

After finishing his studies, Marcelo started his postdoctoral research career at the University of Oxford, followed by a position as a BOF postdoctoral fellow at Ghent University. His teaching portfolio includes Lectureships at the Amsterdam University College and Ghent University. While at the University of Oxford, he served as a Tutorial Fellow in Pure Mathematics at Somerville College and also at Lincoln College.

Marcelo’s research interests are rooted in Pure Mathematics, with a specific focus on Algebra and Representation Theory, always having in mind applications to Number Theory and Quantum Mechanics.

Marcelo joined Forward College in 2024 and will be teaching Mathematics and Statistics at Forward’s Lisbon campus. In his free time, he enjoys playing music, gardening and fussing about with his cats.
