Our Paris campus we had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Carin Runciman, Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, at our Paris campus for a talk on Decolonising Democracy. Dr. Runciman explained how to understand coloniality and decoloniality, and the difference between the two concepts, then introduced her own project, the “Below Project”, which focuses on researching Black South African understanding of democracy.
Finally, she talked about theoretical considerations about democracy in a post-colonial context before moving onto an interesting Q&A session, in which we touched upon important topics such as the hegemonic understanding of democracy in today’s world being highly Western and Eurocentric.
