Justice, Fairness, and the Moral Limits of Markets
This is a course from the Philosophy minor, part of the Open Bachelor’s programme. It is worth 6 ECTS and takes place in Term 2 in Lisbon.
Course Summary
When professional and economic life is organised around performance and optimisation, what space remains for ethics, fairness, and human dignity? Should everything be for sale? Drawing on Rawls, Sandel, Marx, and Smith, you will develop the tools for structured normative reasoning about how societies distribute opportunities, where markets serve the common good and where they undermine it, and how to justify decisions with moral consequences in public and under scrutiny. Leaders make distributive choices constantly. This course builds the judgment to make them honestly, and the intellectual rigour to recognise when there is no clean answer.
